ornamentation - question 3

Von Furstenburg Studio - WORKAC

The project's diverse program is unified through a singular iconic gesture: a stairway that collects and distributes light from the roof through to the deepest interior parts of the building. This shaft of light is conceived of as an inhabitable and connective "stairdelier" – a cross between stair and chandelier. The guardrail will be created from vertical cables, between which will be strung glass crystals provided by Swarovski. A heliostat mirror will track the sun throughout the day and focus light on the crystals, spreading natural light across the ceiling of each floor.

Beach Residence - Huff Gooden

House is built to replace a structure that was destroyed by hurrican Hugo. Latticed wood screen surrounding a concrete core creates comfortable spaces that are suited to the climate and setting. Structurally, the screen stands on exposed gradebeam p ads, which visually ground the latticed wall, and serves to minimize damage from storm surges.

Taj Mahal - Exhibits various types of ornamentation. Ornamentation that demonstrates skill would be the precious stones that are inlayed into the white marble structure. This would be very difficult and meticulous, and there is so much of it on the building. The text from the Koran that is made in black marble might be an example of performative ornamentation because it is ornament that conveys a message. Ornament that gives texture would be the fine carving that can be found throughout the building.

Finally, the combination of the many different types of ornamentation amplifies the buildings presence.
