Rest stop internal logic:
My shade structure is a system of parts rotated around a single axis to provide for seating and shade. The central support system is the column or the “tree trunk” a metal pole that connects with the earth with an auger. There are connections along the pole where seating “leaves” and shade “leaves” can be attached. The seating leaves are heavy and able to support a person, and the shade leaves are light, but rigid. The wind can move them on it’s own, or a person can move the leaves to shade a certain area. The primary driver for this project was the idea of a “flatpack.” The transporation and installation is easy because the structure is so simple. The purchaser can purchase more or less leaves of seating or shade to accommodate the site.
Staib Reading/MoMA home delivery:
Corbusier’s “Dom-ino House Project” was based on a system of concrete columns and flat slabs. Corbusier’s internal logic was based on his “five points of architecture.” First, to make the bulk of the structure off the ground, supporting it by pilotis. Second, to create a free façade, with an open plan. Next, he used ribbon windows to allow views of the yard. Lastly, Corbusier wanted to have a roof garden. These five points were in addition to his idea of prefabricated concrete housing. In the domino housing project he proposed that the users could put together the windows, doors, closets, etc. The domino house had columns and floor slabs that were prefabricated and Corbusier thought this would revolutionize the way we build houses. It seems as though this is coming back into style now that the economy is down and looking at the MoMA home delivery site, it seems as though they have almost the same idea as Corbusier did with the Domino house.
