Logic of Systems

Rest Stop

The primary driver was to design an economical and vernacular building system scaled to the car. This design is only intended for this particular site and should not be considered for other locations; however, the systematization of maximizing use of materials is a universal concept. I specified that the roof of my rammed earth car stalls were to be constructed from their wood framework. So although it is constructed onsite there is no material waste of framework, unlike sitecast concrete.

Digitally Fabricated Housing for New Orleans

The primary driver for this design was to quickly and economically lasercut shelters for the displaced people of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Joinery was an integral design that used notches/grooves instead of nails/screws which not only reduced material use (cost) but also made it quicker and easier to assemble. I found this project very interesting because unlike many prefabricated structures, it addresses the question of vernacular architecture. There is a basic systematization of structural systems but it also allows for variations of exterior decorations to conceal sameness.
