Gas Station

Hey guys, I'll be doing this gas station:

14730 N I H 35, Austin, TX

It's a Shell and Tiger Mart on the corner of Interstate 35 and Wells Branch Pkwy.

I'm looking for an older style one, but am not having much luck, they all seem to have converted over into new swanky brand name stations ... especially into Shells for some reason. So, I'll keep looking but if it doesn't pan out I'll be doing the one mentioned above.

Good luck guys.

Effect and Affect

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial- Maya Li
This memorial wall is cut into the ground and made of a polished black granite. As a result, the material creates a mirror effect, showing reflected images of its surroundings.
(also the form in the ground can be viewed as a gash or a scar in the earth.) "Take a knife and cut open the earth, and with time the grass would heal it."-Lin
The affect of the wall on the visitors is a very powerful experience. Since the wall desends into the ground, as you walk along it you become set off from your surroundings; It becomes just you and the wall. It becomes a very personal and reflective experience.

ornamentation - question 3

Von Furstenburg Studio - WORKAC

The project's diverse program is unified through a singular iconic gesture: a stairway that collects and distributes light from the roof through to the deepest interior parts of the building. This shaft of light is conceived of as an inhabitable and connective "stairdelier" – a cross between stair and chandelier. The guardrail will be created from vertical cables, between which will be strung glass crystals provided by Swarovski. A heliostat mirror will track the sun throughout the day and focus light on the crystals, spreading natural light across the ceiling of each floor.

Beach Residence - Huff Gooden

House is built to replace a structure that was destroyed by hurrican Hugo. Latticed wood screen surrounding a concrete core creates comfortable spaces that are suited to the climate and setting. Structurally, the screen stands on exposed gradebeam p ads, which visually ground the latticed wall, and serves to minimize damage from storm surges.

Taj Mahal - Exhibits various types of ornamentation. Ornamentation that demonstrates skill would be the precious stones that are inlayed into the white marble structure. This would be very difficult and meticulous, and there is so much of it on the building. The text from the Koran that is made in black marble might be an example of performative ornamentation because it is ornament that conveys a message. Ornament that gives texture would be the fine carving that can be found throughout the building.

Finally, the combination of the many different types of ornamentation amplifies the buildings presence.

Five Types of Ornamentation

Performative Ornamentation = Dominus Winery - Herzog de Meuron
Presence Ornamentation = Sagrada Familia - Antonio Gaudi
Textural Ornamentation = Alhambra
Skillful Ornamentation = Erechteion - Mnesicles
Functional Ornamentation = Mini House in Kobe - Hiroaki Ohtani
Presence Ornamentation = Sagrada Familia - Antonio Gaudi

Affect and Effect

In the reading, Kolrevic and Klinger quote Peter Eisenmann's definition of affect and effect in architecture, saying that he makes a clear distinction between the two. He states, "...in architecture it (effect) is the relationship between some object and its function or meaning. In contrast, affect in architecture is simply the sensate response to a physical environment."

Using these definitions, I chose to analyze the effects and affects of a prominent building here in Austin.
UT Tower at Night (specifically when lit orange)
Effects:
As Eisenmann states, the effects are the relationship between the object and its purpose or function, and for this, the towers effects are that of communicating to the UT student body and city of Austin that a significant victory by one of the University's sports teams has been attained, or a campus-wide special event is occurring. This is done by creating a prominent structure in the Austin skyline, (taller than the Capitol, because its on a hill) and lighting it orange against the night sky. The effect, which is communication to the surroundings, is produced by and directly related to the architectural material of limestone and the technique of dramatic uplighting.
Affects:
Again, Eisenmann states that the affects in architecture relate to a person's response to a physical environment. Thus, affect requires some sort of human presence. The affect that the UT Tower produces when lit is a sense of pride, awe, and a sense of connection with the university, student body, and/or the athletic team. It makes being a Longhorn that much better. This affect is easily seen and heard when they display the Tower turning orange after a victory on the Godzillatron in the stadium. Everyone yells, the Hook 'em Horns sign goes up, and a sense of community is created.

Ornament Amplifying Presence (Selfridges Building)

Effects and Affects

The space I chose to analyze in terms of effects and affects is the LBJ Library. Major effects of this space are caused by the material choice of white stone. The effect of this choice is a towering structure that stands out against the blue sky and the shooting water of the tower out front. The affects elicited by this material choice are feelings of power and the majestic quality of the space.

An effect caused in the interior of the space is one of expansiveness. The repetition of the red volumes in the library along with the multi-storied room that is the great hall gives the space a meaning of importance, which as a presidential library, is something it should have. Affects of this space are ones of awe and impressiveness.

duck and decorated shed

monocoque question

thanks Maiya; if anyone else wants to answer this question please focus on something besides what Maiya has==perhaps drawing explaining what it's made of, how it performs structurally.

The duck and decorated shed presents an interesting dichotomy for which buildings are presented and perceived. The Duck, which is an object to be viewed, where the building is the attraction may carry any number of effects but the primary mode of connecting with the viewer is more likely along the lines of an affect. The duck takes on a sculptural quality that may, like a piece of art, evoke a emotional response. The Decorated shed is more likely on the lines of creating effects that capture one's attention, but less likely to create spaces that affect one's perception of the space. Through the use of ornamentation, signs or decorations call the viewer's attention to first the signs, then to the building. The attention may not even necessarily be drawn to the building at all. The user may already be drawn inside without any conscious understanding of the building. For example, one may see the Golden Arches of a McDonald's, drive in the parking lot and enter the building without much attention paid to the building itself. The signage, ornamentation and colors all create effects of advertisement that the customer can understand but rarely deeper than this. Of course, there are some examples of ducks in McDonald's, but referring to the typical McDonald's franchise, the differentiation of effect and affect layout the contrast of decorated shed versus duck.

Nurai - affect and effect

Affect means to influence, while effect means to bring about.

In Architecture Affect is perception and experience of a space, and Effect is the direct meaning of the space.

Nurai by Zaya
www.nuraiisland.ae

Nurai is the newest island resort of Dubai. It offers two types of housing, one integrated into the beaches, and the other built over the water.

The effect of the design is the amazing man made island and site forming.

The beach homes are made as a semi subsurface structure that is part of the island.

The water homes are made floating above the sea on pilers.

The affect is the experience of the residence of the resort.

The beach homes are integrated to the shore and can be walked on as if walking on a hill.

The homes on the water offer 360 degree views of open water and glass facades with nothing blocking views.

The infinity pools for the homes give the feeling of swimming in the open ocean.

This design effect will affect the lifestyle of the residences and the experiences they have.
